How do you recover?

Andrew Carr

The reality of playing golf is that we’re going to hit bad shots from time to time.

When we slightly misjudge a strike or approach the ball in the wrong way, it can have a variety of nail-biting consequences. This could range from striking your tee-shot offline into a perilous body of water, to narrowly missing a straightforward putt.

While hitting a bad shot is always annoying, it’s important not to let the anger get to you. Many golfers look to the 5-second-rule when they’ve hit a bad shot. Giving themselves five seconds to get their frustration out before recovering and getting their minds onto thinking productively again.

How was your recovery on your last bad shot?

No, we’re not trying to torture you by getting you to think of shots you’d rather not remember. When you do mishit the ball and your shot’s ended up in a bad area, it’s good to reflect on how you approached your recovery so you know best how to get yourself out of trouble next time.

Today we want to illustrate how versatile the golf hybrid is, and how it can get you out of tricky situations when you’re faced with difficult shots.

From the rough

How annoying is it to hit a great drive only for your ball to keep going and trickle into the rough? It definitely presents more of a challenge than when your ball is sitting nicely in the middle of the fairway.

You can get away with making a good shot out of the rough, but there’s a greater chance of your ball finding a difficult lie. Instead of reaching for an iron, a golf hybrid may well be the better club to go with.

Hybrids have thicker soles that allow you to easily strike them through tougher turf, and the clubheads are larger and weightier compared to irons to help you pack more of a strike through the ball.

From a fairway bunker

It can make your smile fade rather quickly when you hit an excellent strike off the tee only to see your ball make a bad bounce on the fairway, and it careens awkwardly into a bunker.

Whether they’re by the green or on the fairway, bunkers are notoriously hard to hit out of. A hybrid has a larger clubhead than an iron and will help you get more club on the ball.

If you find you regularly struggle getting out of bunkers, a hybrid will really help you punch through the sand to make your escape.

Being stuck in the trees

We’ve all been there when we’ve hit a bad shot into a copse of trees, and it certainly feels disheartening. It can be a real lottery how your ball has ended up, and you just might not be able to get a club on it. However, on the chance that your ball has come to rest in a clearing, a golf hybrid will be your best bet of making a successful escape.

Hybrids give you both the power of a wood and the wieldy nature of an iron, which is a perfect combination to hit a flat shot back out onto the fairway. You may be restricted from hitting a full swing among the trees, but a half-swing will still generate the momentum you need to get out of a tight spot.

The G430 hybrid has a truly remarkable construction. A composite crown sits on top of the clubhead, saving weight and lowering the center of gravity to give you more height on your strikes. The face has been treated to a variable role radius construction that offers your strikes consistent spin and faster ball speeds, increasing your overall ball-striking performance.

The G430 hybrid is also incredibly well-weighted and feels fantastic in your hands. PING has included a tungsten sole weight that helps you pop the ball up in the air for a better ball flight. This club will certainly help you get out of plenty of scrapes.
